deep madder red ramie shawl

deep madder red ramie shawl

$350.00

An earthy matte red shade. Wear with white to black. For every season!

To create this scarf I began with washing the fabric. The next steps include tannin, mordant and dying the fabric a base color. For the first layer of pattern, I used madder root incorporating a clamp-resist (shibori) technique. Then, after drying, I used hand block printing to add another layer of surface design. After setting, the fabric is machine hemmed and pressed.

fabric: ramie, a natural fiber first cultivated in Eastern Asia, is one of the oldest fibers in the world. Cultivated for more than 5000 years, ramie, also know as China grass, grass linen, and grasscloth, is similar to linen, but has more body and a bit of a crispness.

care: hand wash with mild shampoo, air dry and steam press on silk setting

size: 18" x 77"
